Garbage Disposal Not Working?

There are a few common problems related to a garbage disposal not working. The garbage disposal may be humming, but not working. This could mean the garbage disposal itself is working, but you have a clogged drain. The garbage disposal may not even be turning on. This could be a power issue, or a broken garbage disposal. At Colonial Plumbing, we can replace your garbage disposal with a variety of different disposals we have in stock at our plumbing supply store. Give us a call, and we’ll send one of our expert plumbers to give you a FREE estimate for your garbage disposal replacement.

How Does A Garbage Disposal Work?

You may think that there are spinning blades grinding up food like a blender inside a garbage disposal. However, this is actually not the case. Inside a garbage disposal, there are two impeller, or lugs mounted to a spinning plate. On the interior side walls of the garbage disposal there is what’s called a grind ring. As the plate spins, the lugs push the waste against the grind ring which is covered in sharp protrusions that help grind the food up as much as possible. Once the food is ground up and almost liquified, the running water will push the food through your waste water pipe to give you an empty garbage disposal.
